Notes

After twenty years at Montier Road, we moved to Philadelphia at the end of 2012. To get ready, I sold the heavy stuff: the Ampegs and the Ampex. Yes, the imposing refrigerator-sized tape machine whose picture is on the cover of Totally New (and all over this site). This hunk of Americana had been with me since I bought it in 1979, and would still have been ready to record with a lot of maintenance; but I knew I didn’t have room for it, or time to invest in sourcing parts, fixing things, aligning the amps, etc. So it went to a guy in Eastern Europe, who told me he was starting an all-tube recording studio and just needed a mixdown deck. Bless you, my friend. If you ever have the chance to hear playback from an Ampex 351, do it: they have a really cool mid boost, and a nice roll-off in the highs (response 50 Hz to 15 kHz) that smooths everything out, sort of like a ribbon mic. Mine was born around 1956, like me.

I had to set up the gear again in the new basement, so all the sounds were different. I also retired the Scepter, replacing it with a used Soundcraft GB8. This took getting used to; it has too many features for me, but the additional headroom is most welcome. Thank goodness the new neighbors turned out to be musicians, so tolerant of my racket (shout out to Tim, Jen, Max and Felix).

During the recording, a few major changes came at me. Anna Rose went off to college; I was laid off; and near the end of the sessions, my mother died. All of this is here.
